Balayage vs Highlights: Which is right for your hair?
You know how you want your hair to feel: brighter, softer, more dimensional - or finally like the inspiration photo you keep saving. But when it’s time to book, should you choose balayage or highlights?
At Mercury Salon in New Smyrna Beach, we help you connect the look you love with a color plan that fits your hair and your routine. The starting point is your desired result, how your hair looks today, and how often you want to visit the salon.
What’s the difference between balayage and highlights?
Highlights are sections of hair made lighter than the surrounding color. Balayage is one way to create them, using a hand-painted application.
When people ask for “highlights,” they often mean foil highlights. When they ask for “balayage,” they often picture a soft root, ribbons of brightness, and lighter ends.
The distinction matters: the finished look you want may involve a combination of techniques.
When balayage might suit you
Balayage can be a beautiful option if you like brightness that feels softly blended, with some of your natural depth remaining.
You might be drawn to it if you want:
A dimensional brunette with lighter ribbons
A sun-kissed blonde or bronde
Brightness through the lengths with a softer root
A grow-out that feels less defined
Your starting color and hair history influence what hand painting can achieve. Darker hair or previously colored hair may need a different approach to reach your desired brightness.
When foil highlights might suit you
Foils give your stylist control over which sections are lightened and where that brightness begins. They can be useful for a brighter blonde, delicate highlights near the root, or targeted brightness around your face.
You might prefer a foil-based approach if you want:
A brighter overall blonde
Fine, blended highlights
More brightness closer to the scalp
Carefully placed lightness to complement your haircut or natural texture
Foil highlights can also look soft and lived-in. Placement, the amount of natural depth left between highlights, and finishing techniques all help shape the result.
Can you have a lived-in blonde with foils?
Yes! “Lived-in color” describes the overall look or grow out, rather than one specific application method.
A stylist may combine foils with a root shadow or root melt - a color service that softens the transition at the root - to create brightness with a blended finish. Hand painting may also be part of the plan.
You can love the appearance of balayage and still benefit from foils. Showing your stylist what you like about a photo is more helpful than feeling like you have to know or choose the exact technique.
Which needs less maintenance?
A softer root can make regrowth less noticeable, but maintenance depends on more than whether your stylist uses a brush or foils.
Your natural color, how light you want it to be, gray coverage needs, and preferred tone all affect your routine. A bright blonde maintained close to the scalp usually needs more frequent attention than color designed to keep natural depth at the root.
Even with a softer grow out, you may benefit from a gloss or toner refresh between lightening appointments. Low-maintenance color still needs care to keep the tone and hair feeling their best.
What if you’re starting with dark or previously colored hair?
Be open about your color history, including at-home color and previous lightening. It helps your stylist assess what is realistic and choose an appropriate approach.
A significant change may take more than one appointment. Uneven color or bands from earlier services may also require corrective work before you can achieve the finish you want.
A consultation gives you room to discuss the goal, the condition of your hair, and the time and budget involved.
What should you ask for at your appointment?
Bring a few inspiration photos and explain what catches your eye. Try:
“I want to feel brighter around my face.”
“I like the soft root, but I want lighter ends.”
“I want dimension without losing my brunette.”
“I want a bright blonde and I’m comfortable with regular upkeep.”
Tell your stylist what you don’t like, too! That may be things like visible striping, too much warmth, an overly dark root, or losing the depth that you love.
